The Vanishing Trees

IT HAS been barely four months and Ansal’s has done it again, this time more daringly. It has got hundreds of trees in Palam Vihar chopped off. All in the name of safeguarding them from high tension wires. Last year in October, Star Estate Management Limited (SEML) the maintenance wing of Ansal’s had chopped off trees in Sushant Lok and Palam Vihar and were slapped a fine of Rs. 7000/-.
Nandita Lahiri, president of the Gurgaon chapter of INTAC who lives opposite the place where the trees were cut says, “The trees cut in front of our house were 20 years old. They will take 10 more years to get to the original shape.”
GM (projects) Ansal’s Properties Limited, Arun Nijhavan says that they were authorized by the electricity department to prune trees to save them from the high tension electricity line going overhead.
Vivek Kamboj, president of an NGO Haryali, has registered a complaint against the developer with the DC, SSP and the forest department. District Forest Officer, Gurgaon, Alok Verma says they would register a case of offence and slap a find on the builder.
